The confrontation between Islamic and Western civilizations has several turning points; 1. In the seventh century AD in the context of the translation movement,2. the outbreak of the Crusades from the late eleventh century to the late thirteenth century and finally3. the colonial era from the eighteenth century onwards. The present article focuses on the intellectual developments of the eighteenth century and beyond and its consequences on Muslim civilization During this period, the identity and lived experience of Muslims (Eastern, Islamic and modern identities) were strongly influenced by the West; In such a way that it launched a wave of different thought patterns in Islamic societies. These currents of thought have been formed in response to two main issues: first, modernity means the abandonment of religion or the reinterpretation of religion, which itself required the determination of the place of religion in the socio-political life of Muslims. Second, is the condition for development and progress secularization, or, more philosophically, is the nature of development secular?. The main question of the article is: What effect has the confrontation with the West had on Muslim civilization? It seems that Muslims not only knew each other (the West) with different perceptions and concepts, but also found different identities in another mirror. In the Islamic world, from the eighteenth century onwards, different currents of thought have been formed in the face of the West, which can be recognized in five categories: 1) Following the West. 2) Religious reform. 3) Nationalism .4) Traditional Islamism. 5) Rethinking. Findings show that a rethinking approach based on critical acceptance rather than just confrontation or acceptance is one of the sensible ways to preserve the identity of Muslims in the age of multiculturalism. Accordingly, reading the Islamic tradition and rebuilding its epistemological foundation, maintaining interactions in the field of needs without further rejection, strengthening the foundations of understanding and thinking can be a way out of the crises arising from the confrontation of Islam with the West. The present study will use the method of qualitative content analysis.
