This study aims at evaluating the text books intended for
teaching technical subjects in the Secondary stage. Textbooks
covered in this study are the ones for teaching commercial sciences,
computer sciences, agricultural and animal production and
engineering. The total number of the books is twelve. Another aim
of this study is to identify the difficulties faced in handling these
technical subjects.
The study covered five states: (Algazira, Algadarif, The Red
Sea, River Nile, North Kordofan). The study used a quintuple scale
questionnaire (closed and open), as well as a series of interviews
with teachers and education administrator in the above mentioned
states. The most important findings of the study involve a
considerable shortage in the number of trained teachers and
supervisors, insufficient time for teaching technical subjects, the
limited numbers of textbooks and teachers' guide books. It is also
found that these textbooks are characterized with numerous
scientific and linguistic errors and they lack proper exercises of
evaluation and application. There is also great concern regarding
their technical format, layout and presentation of diagrams and
illustration figures. There is an obvious need for raising the standard
of these texts.
It is found that seven of the textbooks evaluated have received
the approval of more than 70% of the study sample (The percentage
reached about 88% in some cases). Books that received approval of (65% - 31.4 %) of the study sample seem to need further
consideration.
The researchers offer the following recommendations for the
remedy of the shortcomings. These include provision of adequate
number of trained teachers and supervisors, provision of enough
texts and teacher guide books, in addition to improving their layout
and illustration. It is also recommended that more time should be
allocated for teaching technical subjects. Furthermore, special
measures should be taken to correct the scientific and linguistic
errors and misprints. Also there should be more consideration of
diagrams, figures and teaching aids. It is also suggested that more
attention should be paid to the pupils' evaluation, activities and
applications exercises.
