The situation of male and female prisoners and even children in the gulags is so deplorable
in terms of nutrition and health that most of the prisoners were always hungry
and death was waiting for them at any moment. The factors influencing the death
of Gulag prisoners in terms of health and nutrition are less or scattered in previous
research. This study intends to study the health status and nutrition of prisoners in
the camps specifically. Stalin believed that «everyone who does not work should not
eat» or that work was a cure. This is why this article examines the food, medicine,
and treatment of inmates in concentration camps. Indifference when prisoners
are ill, torture through starvation, lack of access to health care, dirty and cramped
cells, threatening the physical and mental health of prisoners. Infectious diseases in
concentration camps have been a means of killing of prisoners in the Soviet Union.
The type of data collection is library and documentary. The purpose of this article is
to answer these questions scientifically and based on documents Why is health and
nutrition important in the former Soviet concentration camps? How did the lack of
sanitation facilities in the camps cause illness and death of prisoners?
