Political participation is the inalienable right of each and every citizen in democratic political systems around the world. Nevertheless, the procedure that different groups of people adopt for their participation depends on their socio-cultural and technological context. These being the case, the latest emerging communication technologies such as the Internet and online social networks have drastically shaped individual’s participation. As a result, the prominent role of social networks like Facebook, Twitter and telegram etc. in the evolution of political systems proves this crucial point. Taking into account the rational choice approach and “dual spacization of social world, This survey study, considering the rational choice approach and the paradigm of dual spatialization of the social world, has tried to examine the relationship between political costs (perceived and received) with students' political participation in both online and offline spaces. Based on this, 390 students of Shiraz University completed a multi-stage selection and questionnaire using random sampling method. The results indicate that despite more offline political participation by students, perceived political costs have no significant relationship with political participation in both spaces; But the political expenses paid in both spaces have a positive and significant relationship with political participation. The results show that in order to explain political participation, one must go beyond the rational choice approach and consider variables such as the political culture of the society and the cultural interpretations of political actors
