The issue of literary over lapping subsumes within the framework of literary theory or literary
poetry. As a matter of fact, the boundaries between literary genres fade away either temporarily or
permanently. Poetry overlaps with or with other arts. This is due to what the author's attitude
towards freedom of creativity or modernity.
Genre overlapping is connected to the text concept. Indeed, the determination of the text nature,
including its salient characteristics and mechanisms, contributes to the perception of genres purity
or their overlapping and the subsequently resulting mixture of the latter. A genre is comparable to a
textual contract between a writer and a reader while overlapping is analogical to an act of rebellion
over a previous contract.
Both Western and Arab literary critical studies investigated this phenomenon and scrutinized the
creator's preoccupations with regard to this modernist overlapping of literary genres. This
experience opened new horizons to writers in view of the demonstration of a new artistic reality in
which a limitless freedom of creativity interacted with their peculiar immanence. In addition to this,
valuable opportunities for optimum writing mechanisms, impregnated with humanitarian views,
were provided.
It is undebatable that a sound knowledge of the literary genres plays a significant role in literary
history as well as in textual and artistic development. For this reason, the controversy revolving
around this question involves two outstanding groups comprising proponents and opponents of
genre overlapping.
