Abstract:
Objectives: Quality of life and mental vitality are two critical issues in the field of the elderly. This research aimed to study the effect of cognitive enhancement and transcranial direct current stimulation on the quality of life and mental vitality of older adults who suffer from mild cognitive impairment.
Methods and Materials: This research was a quasi-experimental study in which a pre-test-post-test design with follow-up was used. The study’s statistical population included all the elderly with mild cognitive impairment. 40 elderly patients referred to the Rehabilitation Clinic of Payambaran Hospital in Tehran and diagnosed with mild cognitive deficits based on clinical criteria were randomly selected and assigned to an experimental group and a control group. For the experimental group, cognitive enhancement with transcranial direct current stimulation was performed for 12 individual sessions. LEIPAD quality of life questionnaire and subjective vitality scale of Ryan and Frederick were used to measure the variables. Analysis of variance with two-way repeated measures was used to analyze the data with SPSS version 25.
Results: The results showed a significant difference between the experimental and control groups regarding the quality of life and mental vitality in the post-test. Combining cognitive enhancement with transcranial direct current stimulation affected the quality of life and mental health of the elderly with mild cognitive impairment. Also, according to the follow-up studies, the observed differences between the groups were stable over time (p
Conclusion: Combining cognitive enhancement with transcranial direct current stimulation can have a more significant impact on the quality of life and mental vitality of the elderly with mild cognitive impairment than applying any of these methods alone.
