Abstract:
Mohammed Abed Al-Jabri seeks for the Arab roots by developing a macro-narrative in the conception of Arab identity. To find origins of the decline of the Arab state, he methodically searches for the starting point of excellence and the fall of the Arab Muslim civilization in the so-called “Asr al-Tadwin”. In his intellectual project he calls The Critique of Arab Reason, Al-Jabri keep notes about the evolution of knowledge in the east of Islamic civilization, and ironically, he considers the philosophical roots of unjustifiable religious and eclectic systems of the Arab East (Iran) as the source of backwardness. The problem here is how he advances The Critique of Arab Reason. The current paper aims to provide a systematic review on the intellectual project of this philosopher and to develop a methodological analysis in organizing his great project. This article tries to provide a systematic extraction from the content of Abed al-Jabri's thoughts within the conceptual framework of structural linguistics, especially from the viewpoint of Mikhail Bakhtin regarding issues such as Al-Jabri's identification of basic conflict in the contemporary Muslim world and his conceptualization of “intellect” and “legacy”; and also to methodically draw out linguistic-logical aspects from his thoughts, especially reasoning and methodology in organizing his intellectual narratives. As a conclusion, the research reveals that Abed al-Jabri, as a modernist philosopher, owns his special practice in the intellectual project for Islamic modernization, which can be called the "Structured Sharia". As a structuralist, Al-Jabri goes beyond the existing data in different fields like politics, ethics, philosophy, etc., and shows what fixed structures (logical-linguistic structures) are hidden behind these visible variations that made such variations possible. The great absence of this view is the lack of attention for “meaning”. Structuralism substitutes symbols for meaning and neglects how symbols convey the meaning. Structuralists, including Al-Jabri, ignore what appeals to many cultural researchers; i.e. how do people understand and interpret their world? Considering this importance, through what this philosopher accomplishes in his mixed methodology; namely, a) a sociological investigation of the formation of the Arab reason, b) an analysis of the “structuring of the Arab reason” based on social factors and cultural trends influencing the formulation of the culture order of the Arab reason, and c) an epistemological examination of the internal logic of Arab reason, this paper analyzes the internal elements and relationships of this project and its impact on the two specific realms of politics and ethics.
